Turning a Vision for Growth Into Reality
As Ronk Brothers grew, the financial infrastructure and trusted partnership behind the business grew with it—giving leadership greater clarity to make decisions and pursue what’s next.
When Brian Ronk acquired Ronk Brothers, he saw more than an established heating and cooling company. He saw the potential to build an organization that could grow while making a meaningful difference in the communities it served.
Today, Ronk Brothers Heating, Cooling & Electrical serves customers across five counties in Northwest Washington. While the company has expanded significantly, Brian still describes it as a local “mom-and-pop shop” focused on something bigger than simply providing a service. Customers often call because something has stopped working, an unexpected expense has appeared, and they need someone they can trust. For Brian and his team, how they respond to those moments is an opportunity to make someone's day—and their community—a little better.
That vision has helped shape the company Ronk Brothers has become. But as the business grew, Brian also recognized that vision and ambition alone wouldn't be enough. Building the company he imagined would require a team of people with different expertise, perspectives, and capabilities around him.
Client Perspective: Brian Ronk shares what he’s learned as a business owner and how having the right people around him has helped turn his vision for Ronk Brothers into reality.
Growth Requires More Than a Vision
When the current ownership acquired Ronk Brothers, the company was generating a significant but modest amount of revenue. As the business expanded, the financial systems, reporting, planning, and decision-making infrastructure needed to evolve with it.
Ronk initially engaged Flexure for accounting and advisory support. What began with a strong accounting foundation gradually grew into a broader relationship focused on helping leadership understand the business, evaluate opportunities, and make informed decisions.
Growth naturally brought additional complexity. New services, changing systems, additional business activities, and emerging opportunities created more information for leadership to understand and more decisions to make. The challenge wasn't simply keeping the accounting current; it was building the financial infrastructure necessary to support an increasingly sophisticated organization.
Building the Financial Foundation
Flexure first strengthened Ronk Brothers' accounting infrastructure through transactional accounting support, monthly reconciliations, controller-level trial balance review, system changes and enhancements, and support as new ventures and business activities emerged.
As the organization became more complex, its reporting evolved as well. Monthly financial reporting expanded to include budget-versus-actual performance and greater visibility into profitability across individual service divisions. Instead of seeing only how the company performed as a whole, leadership could better understand what was happening within different areas of the business, where margins were changing, and how actual performance compared with the plan.
The ongoing nature of the relationship also gave the Flexure team something that financial reports alone couldn't provide: context. Working closely with Ronk month after month created a deeper understanding of how the company operates, what leadership is trying to accomplish, and how individual decisions connect to the larger business.
“They really are like an actually integrated team member into Ronk Brothers.”
– Brian Ronk, Owner of Ronk Brothers
That understanding became increasingly valuable as the conversations moved beyond accounting and into the future of the business.
Turning Financial Information Into Decisions
Each month, a Flexure advisor meets in person with Ronk's executive leadership to review financial performance, discuss variances, answer questions, and consider what the numbers may be signaling. Rather than simply delivering a set of financial statements, the monthly process gives leadership an opportunity to understand the story behind the numbers and consider how that information should influence decisions moving forward.
As the relationship developed, those conversations expanded into annual planning, budgeting, strategic planning, and broader evaluation of growth opportunities. Questions about investments, expansion, service-line performance, new ventures, and organizational priorities could be considered alongside the business's financial realities.
For Brian, Flexure ultimately plays several interconnected roles. The accounting team helps maintain the company's financial foundation. The advisory relationship provides fractional CFO-level financial planning and perspective. And when Brian is considering a new idea or opportunity, the relationship provides a trusted outside perspective from people who already understand Ronk Brothers.
The result is a connection between financial information and business decision-making. Accounting provides an accurate picture of where the company has been, while reporting, planning, and ongoing advisory help leadership use that information to decide where to go next.
Growing With Greater Visibility
During the first several years of the relationship, Ronk Brothers grew their revenue to just over 175%. That growth belongs to Brian and the Ronk team. They built the relationships, served the customers, developed their people, expanded their capabilities, and created the momentum that moved the company forward.
Flexure's role has been to help strengthen the infrastructure underneath that growth. Today, the relationship includes controller-level monthly reconciliation, published financial reporting, budget-versus-actual analysis, profitability reporting by service division, annual budgeting and planning, and ongoing strategic conversations with leadership.
Together, those capabilities provide something broader than accounting support. They give leadership greater visibility into how the company is performing, create a disciplined rhythm for evaluating the business, and provide a place to pressure-test ideas before turning them into investments or initiatives.
Giving the Vision a Foundation
Brian readily describes himself as a visionary and a dreamer. Those qualities have helped him imagine what Ronk Brothers could become, but he also recognizes that turning those ideas into reality requires balancing ambition with the practical realities of operating a growing company.
That's where he sees some of the greatest value in having a partner who understands both sides of the equation.
“Having someone on your team that's able to partner with you, that really understands how to mesh what a visionary and a dreamer does with the realities of running a day-to-day business, is absolutely vital for our company.”
– Brian Ronk, Owner of Ronk Brothers
That balance creates room for ambition without losing sight of the financial and operational realities required to turn an idea into a sustainable business decision. Rather than tempering the vision, the right infrastructure and perspective can help create a path for making it possible.
A Readiness for What is Ahead
Ronk Brothers today is a considerably different organization from the company Brian originally acquired. Its services, reach, team, and capabilities have expanded, while its focus remains rooted in providing a meaningful customer experience and positively impacting the communities it serves.
As the organization continues to evolve, the questions facing leadership will evolve with it. The systems that worked at one stage of growth may need to change at the next, and new opportunities will require new decisions about people, capital, services, and direction.
The relationship between Ronk Brothers and Flexure has grown for the same reason. What began with accounting support has become an ongoing partnership built around financial clarity, planning, perspective, and informed decision-making. Ronk provides the vision, leadership, people, and determination to move the company forward; Flexure helps provide the infrastructure and insight to support that journey.
“Our relationship with Ronk Brothers is a great example of how the best partnerships are built on trust, understanding, and a shared commitment to the future. We’ve had the privilege of supporting their growth, but they’ve also helped us grow through their trust, openness, and collaboration. That’s what a true partnership is all about—helping each other succeed and prepare for what’s next.”
– Travis Huisman, CEO Flexure
